Southbank Sinfonia is a groundbreaking new initiative for music education, unique in Europe. It offers an intensive learning and performing experience to the most outstanding graduates of UK music colleges in the form of a professional orchestral apprenticeship. Southbank Sinfonia’s programme covers all aspects of performance and related skills. Approximately 90 performances take place each year including free weekly rush hour concerts at St John’s Church, Waterloo (the orchestra’s home); concerts in London and across the UK. The musicians play in large-scale orchestral performances, but also in small chamber groups; they learn to lead educational workshops; they participate in cross-arts projects; they are coached weekly, by leaders in the field, on communication, improvisation and leadership. They will deliver the music training programme, which will lead to a presentation at the festival.
